On October 24, 2022, China Axle Network received official information from NIDEC that their second-generation “E-Axle” drive motor system (hereinafter referred to as “Gen.2”) for pure electric vehicles began official mass production.
In April 2019, as a Tier 1 supplier, NIDCO has Axle(Gen.1), which is the axle drive motor system for pure electric vehicles that integrates motors, inverters, and transmissions, to date in mass production worldwide. Since then, the system has been mainly adopted by a large number of Chinese customers, by the end of September 2022, has been installed in 13 models, and by the end of September 2022, the production has exceeded 520,000 units.
On September 26, 2022, the second-generation E-Axle drive system products launched by NIDEK Automotive Drive Systems Co., Ltd. in Guangzhou, China, are based on the technical know-how acquired by NIDEK through the development of Gen.1 and mass production, including magnetic circuit design technology and oil-cooling technology, which further realize the lightweight and mute features of the products. The product will be mass-produced starting with the 100kW model, and the current 200kW and 150kW models will be switched to the Gen 2.
The second-generation E-Axle drive motor system Gen.2 has the axle size of 432.8mm x 408.3mm x 351.3mm, and the weight is only 57kg. The peak power is 100kW, the rated power is 38kW, the peak torque of the power output shaft can reach 2400Nm, the maximum speed of the power output shaft can reach 1250rpm, and the operating voltage is 300-460V.
The features of the second-generation E-Axle drive motor system Gen.2 mainly include: axle circuit miniaturization and inverter miniaturization have been achieved by adopting the high-duty winding technology of the second-generation product, and the weight has been reduced by 19%, torque and power density has been increased by 20%; The cooling performance is improved by using the newly developed 2Way oil cycle, which uses magnets that can significantly reduce Dy(dysprosium), Tb(TB) and other heavy rare earths. Orderly conversion to the use of non-heavy rare earth magnets; By optimizing the configuration of components and adopting the newly designed transmission, the motor noise is reduced by 6 ~ 8dB on the basis of the previous two models of motors with excellent quietness.
It is reported that NIDEC has set the target of 40-45% global axle market share for pure electric vehicles by 2030, and the second-generation E-Axle drive system will become an important part to achieve this goal. As one of the world’s leading integrated motor manufacturers, NIDEC will continue to develop products that take full advantage of lightweight, high energy efficiency and control technology to quickly provide customers with innovative automotive solutions.
